Talks have been kick-started between King Mswati III and a South African traditional chief who has intention to marry the Swazi king’s first born daughter, Princess Sikhanyiso.
Chief Hhoyi II of the Ngomane Royal Household, who is the traditional leader of Mpumalanga province in South Africa, confirmed to local media that he loves the 30-year-old princess and would love to marry her.
The princess celebrated her 30th birthday on September 1.
“I have met with the princess on a couple of occasions but I will not divulge what we discussed for now. The matter has also been discussed with the (Swazi) Royal Family and these are issues I cannot discuss with the media,” he was quoted as saying.
The chief is a successor of Kgoshi Lameck Mokoena and his real name is Sandile Ngomane.
He took over chieftaincy in August 2017 after traditional elections that were held in Malelane, South Africa.
He had attended the annual Reed Dance ceremony in Swaziland two weeks ago and during this event, he publicly displayed dance moves indicating intimacy and placed his shield in front of the princess while she danced with about 100 000 maidens.
This is a rare opportunity and it can only be afforded to men through consent by Royalty; in this case it was an indication that the chief may have had a discussion with the princess’ family earlier on issues of marriage.
“I had sought permission to publicly appreciate the princess during the Reed Dance. Even though I have not proposed yet, talks are already underway at family level,” he revealed.
As part of the gesture, the 42-year-old chief planted a feather on the princess’ hair.
The traditional council led by Chief Hhoyi has been elected to promote the culture of Ubuntu through social responsibility programmes and to inform and educate the community about the dangers of HIV and AIDS.
