SADC summit concludes with signing of instruments, the Agreement Amending the Protocol on Extradition included

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government Ordinary Summit concluded with the signing of several instruments here on Sunday.
The summit which began on Saturday was held under the theme A Conducive Environment for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development, Increased Intra-Trade and Job Creation.
They include the Agreement Amending the Protocol on Extradition; Agreement Amending the Protocol on Mutual Legal Assistance in Crime Matters; Protocol on Industry and Protocol on the Inter-State Transfer of Sentenced Offenders.
The instruments were signed and adopted by the 16 SADC Heads of States in closed-door meetings at the Tanzanian State House on Saturday.
The Protocol on Industry aims to promote the development of diversified, innovative and globally competitive, regional and global industrial nations to enable the region to achieve sustainable and inclusive industrial development.
The Protocol on the Inter-State Transfer of Sentenced Offenders will allow for the transfer of sentenced offenders to serve their sentences in their home countries.
This will be done to contribute to social re-integration of citizens who are sentenced offenders as a result of criminal offences they committed in foreign countries in the region.
Protocol on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters aims to have State parties laws on the authentication of documents harmonised and aligned with international practices.
The agreement amending the existing Protocol on Extradition, to align the protocol with international best practices which requires that authentication of documents pertaining to extradition should be done in accordance to domestic laws of the requested States to ensure that documents meet the feasibility criteria in courts of law of the member States, was also signed.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwes President Emmerson Mnangagwa was the only one who signed the Agreement Amending the Protocol on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation adopted in 2009; the Agreement Amending the Protocol on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation adopted in 2015 and the Agreement Amending the SADC Treaty adopted in 2009, which have already been signed by 12 States.
Mozambiques President Filipe Nyusi is now the Deputy Chairperson of SADC taking over from Tanzania, while his country will chair and host the 40th SADC Summit of Heads of States and Government in 2020.
