Mozambique: Zambézia AP sets up working committees
Notícias / President Filipe Nyusi
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) on Tuesday thanked Mozambique for its work over the past year chairing the SADC Organ for Defence, Security and Political Cooperation.
Speaking at the summit of SADC heads of state and government in the Swazi capital, Mbabane, the organisation’s executive secretary, Stergomena Tax, said that over this period the southern African region had remained “peaceful and stable”, and the SADC member states “continued to adhere to democratic values and practice”.
Her evidence for these claims were the elections held in Tanzania, Seychelles and Zambia, all of which were regarded as successful and credible.
She thanked Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi for his leadership of the SADC defence and security troika, and for sending observer missions to those member states which held elections in 2015.
On Monday Nyusi chaired a session of the troika for the last time, although Mozambique remains a member of the troika, as the outgoing chairperson. Tanzania, previously deputy chair, now takes over chairing the troika, while South Africa leaves and is replaced by Angola.
The summit confirmed King Mswati III of Swaziland as the head of SADC for the next year, taking over the rotating presidency from President Ian Khama of Botswana.
The Swazi Minister of Planning and Development, Prince Hlangusemphi, declared that Mswati is aware that food insecurity remains “the main enemy” that SADC leaders must fight against.
A report on food security and the drought situation in SADC countries said there are more than 40 million vulnerable people in the southern African region, and SADC needs 2.9 billion US dollars to face the effects of the drought.
So far, according to the SADC Council of Ministers, the member states and their cooperation partners have raised 393.7 million dollars in aid for the victims of the drought.
