The trial of a wealthy South African businessman started at the Supreme Court in Port Louis‚ Mauritius‚.
Peter Wayne Roberts of Johannesburg is accused of murdering his girlfriend Lee-Ann Palmarozza at one of the most opulent resorts on the island. Her body was found in the swimming pool at the five-star Anahita resort in December 2014 and he was arrested shortly thereafter.
His lawyer Marco Martini said his client had pleaded not guilty.
“Today they made a jury selection‚ [there was] an opening address and they led certain state witnesses…policemen mainly‚” said Martini.
When asked how Roberts is dealing with the matter Martini said: “I am sure it is not pleasant to be in a foreign country. I think he is coping‚ that’s my view.”
It has been reported that Roberts owns a villa at the resort where he has a butler‚ a private chef‚ a helicopter and a boat.
Palmarozza flew to Mauritius on Boxing Day to join Roberts after spending Christmas Day with her family in Henley-on-Klip in the Vaal in 2014.
The pair had lived between his Hyde Park mansion and his Umhlanga penthouse.
