A world kickboxing champion from Centurion has died in a motorcycle accident while on holiday in Mozambique.
Johan Westervelt, 30, tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident in Mozambique on Saturday, Rekord Centurion reported.
According to Daleen Coetzee, a family member, Westervelt was touring the country on a motorcycle with some friends. He died when an ox crossed the road and his bike hit the animal.
Coetzee said the exact details of the accident and funeral arrangements had not yet been confirmed.
Chairperson of the South African Kickboxing Association, Pat Carney, told The Citizen the sad passing of Westervelt was a great loss.
“He was an outstanding fighter, a role model and he was a generous person. We will miss this chap,” added Carney.
Westervelt won the WKF World Championships in 2014 and was active in the South African kickboxing community.
He was also a contender in the Bar One Man Hunt Challenge, a reality TV series seeking the “most rugged” man in South Africa.
Coetzee says he touched many lives and made a massive difference wherever he went.
