Rwandan Louis Baziga, who owns a restaurant and a pharmacy in Maputo, reappeared on 25 March after being missing for sometime, accusing his Hutu compatriots of having paid Mozambican police agents to murder him, reports online publication IGIHE in its edition in French.
“My countrymen have raised a conspiracy against me. A police officer told me that my countrymen had paid him to kill me. He gave me hard facts, including an audio of the instructions to kill me. I promised the policeman and his team to double the amount those behind the murder had promised,” Baziga is cited as saying.
According to the same source, Baziga, who is also the chairman of the Rwandan Diaspora in Mozambique and leading figure in the community, easily convinced the police officers responsible to give him all the information he needed to catch the instigators.
“I gave them my car, my phone and my credit cards for them to prove that I was dead. Then I hid somewhere. I even avoided contact with my own family for six days. Then, on 25 March, the police made a 90-minute plane journey to meet and detain the person behind the conspiracy,” Baziga said, adding that the police were continuing their investigation into further accomplices in Maputo.
Information in possession of IGIHE suggests that the person in question is a pastor with the initials T D.
“This crime is sad, just when Rwandans in Mozambique are beginning to show solidarity. They do good business in Mozambique and will invest back in Rwanda. But there is a small, virulently ethnocentric group who behave in a criminal way against Rwandans who are anxious to come from Rwanda to invest,” Rwanda’s ambassador to South Africa and Mozambique says.
According to ambassador Karega, 500 Rwandans are living in Maputo alone.
This attempted crime follows another in Maputo, where, in 2012, the body of the murdered head of the Rwanda Development Bank, Théogène Turatsinze, was found in a river near the city.
