This Tuesday, the Mozambican Red Cross received more than seven tons of food, hygiene and clothing products from the Russian Embassy, donated for humanitarian assistance to victims of terrorism in Cabo Delgado. The donation was given by Russian mining firm Tazetta Resources [a member of East Minerals].
The products are valued at more than one million meticais and consist of pasta, rice, corn flour, cooking oil, soap and more than 100 kilograms of clothes for the children who, each day, arrive in the city of Pemba alone or with their guardians, fleeing the insurgency that is raging in some parts of Cabo Delgado province.
Since they arrive with almost nothing, they need a little of everything and, therefore, the Red Cross of Mozambique decided to “knock on doors” in search of support for the displaced.
“Our intention is to collect as much as possible, particularly clothing and non-perishable products to guarantee that we respond to the needs of these people,” said the president of the Red Cross of Mozambique, Avelino Mondlane.
According to Mondlane, it is difficult to define, in quantitative terms, the real needs of these people, as each day more people arrive and, thus, the needs increase.
“We have also assisted victims in the process of arrival by sea, as well as in the issue of shelter. Just last week, we received two European Union cargo ships with supplies.”
The level of support has been slow, but it is arriving, Mondlane says.
Once the request was made, the response arrived this Tuesday from Russian company Tazetta, through the Russian Embassy in Mozambique.
Ambassador Alexandre Surikov said that “this gesture shows that Russian companies are also concerned about the situation in Mozambique and we promise to continue with similar initiatives”.
This is not the first time that the Russian company has supported Mozambique, chairman of the Board of Directors of Tazetta Resources, Evgeny Volosov, said.
“As part of our social responsibility, we have already invested in the areas of health and education. An operating room in the District Hospital of Pebane was rehabilitated, a medicine warehouse was built from scratch in the same hospital and we have already rehabilitated many schools in Pebane and in Mocubela districts [Inhambane and Zambézia provinces, respectively],” Volosov noted.
