The Mozambican government has reiterated its neutral position in the war between Russia and Ukraine, while regretting the deaths and forced displacement of the population inside and outside that European country.
This was the position conveyed by Minister of the Interior, Arsénia Massingue, at her meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine in Mozambique, Liubov Abravitova.
The Ambassador of Ukraine to Mozambique, based in Pretoria, South Africa, came to Maputo to strengthen relations and explain what is happening in Ukraine and what led to the dispute with Russia.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Miister Arsénia Massingue said that the Mozambican government regrets the situation, but maintains the neutrality arising from the Constitution of the Republic, which defends the resolution of disputes through dialogue.
“We as Mozambique regret this situation; we regret the deaths and we regret the internal and external forced displacements,” Minister Massingue said at the end of the meeting with the Ukrainian ambassador.
“This is what we conveyed to the ambassador of Ukraine,” she underlined.
The Minister of the Interior said that she had heard from the Ukrainian diplomat that the parties to the conflict were in talks aimed at avoiding further human and material damage, as well to mitigate the situation that Mozambique and the rest of the world is experiencing due to food shortages arising from the blockading of ports.
For her part, Ukrainian ambassador Liubov Abravitova acknowledged that the conflict was having negative consequences not only for her country, but also for the world economy.
“Mozambique is an important country in helping to stop the war,” the Ukrainian diplomat said.
