Rogério Daniel Ndzawana, first president of the Executive Council of the city of Matola, died aged 94 at his home in Matola yesterday.
Born on 21 May 1923 in the Chamanculo neighbourhood, Ndzawana was among the first group of Mozambicans sent to Tanzania to announce the beginning of national independence negotiations between Frelimo and the Portuguese colonial government.
A veteran of the national liberation struggle, Ndzawana was president of the Juvenile Court (Tribunal de Menores), a position he retired from in 2004 having served about 20 years.
Among other roles, Ndzawana was also head of the Office of Supply and Organisation of the city of Maputo, a deputy of the People’s Assembly and advisor to Matola municipality on land conflict issues.
Ndzawana leaves five children, 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. His funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, according to a family source.
