The central Mozambican province of Manica registered 78 deaths as the result of road accidents in the first half of the year. According to police spokesperson Leonardo Colher, a further 164 people were injured, of whom 53 sustained serious injuries.
He lamented that “the number of deaths is high compared with last year. This calls for a deep reflection and we have to design practical strategies to minimise the problem”.
Colher added that “accidents, apart from the loss of life, also destroy property gained through great sacrifice and this slows down development”.
He pointed out that excessive speed, careless pedestrians, drunk driving, mechanical defects, lack of road signage and ignoring the rules of the road were the main causes of accidents.
Colher said that the authorities are launching a civic education campaign targeting drivers and pedestrians. Other measures will include an increase in scrutiny by police to ensure the rigorous compliance with traffic regulations and to combat driving while under the influence of alcohol.
The majority of accidents took place on the two main highways through the province, the EN6 and the EN7.
