Twenty-three people died and 56 others suffered physical and psychological trauma, 31 seriously, in 27 road accidents resulting from speeding, poor pedestrian road sense and ignoring priority signs on Mozambique’s roads in the week 14 to 20 August.
According to Mozambique police, a number of people were also run over and injured. From August 12 to 18, at least 11 people were dragged by cars, with six vehicles leaving the road and overturning and four collisions between cars, three between vehicles and motorcycles and an equal number of collisions with fixed obstacles, police spokesman Inácio Dina reported.
During public consultation on road safety in Mozambique, the National Land Transport Institute (INATTER), which coordinates policy, has established that car accidents are the main cause of death and injury. Schoolchildren, many of whom use public highways unaccompanied, feature on the list of the main victims.
Speaking at the regular weekly press briefing, Dina recalled that in the same period last year, 18 citizens lost their lives and another 52 contracted serious and minor injuries in 26 road accidents.
In the city and province of Maputo and and Tete and Zambézia provinces, four drivers have been handed prison sentences for offering bribes of 200 to 3,600 meticais to agents of the Transit Police, and 12 other individuals jailed for driving illegally.
INATTER, whose function is to ensure public safety and public order and to combat violations of the law, checked 38,660 vehicles during the period in question. Of these, 4,190 drivers were fined for various irregularities and 283 drivers had their licences withdrawn for traffic violations.
During the week under review, the police registered 112 crimes, of which 96 were cleared up. Of these, the bulk were invasions of property.
