Mozambique: Road accidents - a daily challenge for students on their way to and from school
Domingo
Six people were killed and five others injured in a car accident on Saturday morning on National Road Number One (EN1) in the Manhiça area of Maputo province.
According to Francisco Johane Nhanala, head of Transit Police Operations at the Provincial Command of Maputo, the accident, a head-on collision between a passenger minibus and a truck transporting tomatoes from Gaza province, was caused by speeding and the driver of the minibus talking on his cell phone.
One minibus passenger said that the driver had been told not to talk on the cell phone just minutes before the accident, but had not heeded the advice.
The injured and dead were taken to Manhiça District Hospital.
The police, meanwhile, have appealed to everybody, and drivers in particular, to be more careful and respect traffic rules in order to avoid more bloodshed on Mozambique’s roads.
