More than six million people living in the Zambezi Valley region in the center of the country, will have better access to information and entertainment with the installation of ten new Radio Mozambique repeater antennae this year.
The President of the Board of Directors of national public radio broadcasting, Faruco Sadique, said yesterday in Morrumbala, Zambezia province, that the deployment has the support of the Zambezi Valley Development Agency, which has funded the project.
Speaking yesterday at the inauguration of the first repeater, Sadique said the main aim of the partnership is to increase the quality of the Radio Mozambique signal and Internet access so that people know what is happening in the country and further afield.
Another objective, he said, is to promote agricultural techniques to increase production levels and productivity and prevent disease.
The ten signal repeaters will be situated in Mocuba, Morrumbala and Chinde in Zambezia; Zumbo and Chifunde in Tete; Chemba and Chiringoma in Sofala; and Tambara, Catandica and Gondola in Manica. According Sadique, the challenge is to expand access to radio across the country and transmit local content and live broadcasts with the participation of local residents.
Another objective, according Sadique, is the dissemination of programs that are being carried out by the government, its partners and communities themselves to fight poverty and build a fairer society.
Each of the ten Zambezia repeater antennae costs three-and-a-half million meticais and covers a distance of one hundred kilometers. Radio Mozambique’s strategic plan envisages the deployment of repeaters in thirty-five district capitals across the country.
The governor of Zambezia, Abdul Razak, who chaired the inauguration ceremony, said the repeaters will strengthen national unity, promote human rights and inform local residents of social, economic, cultural and political events occurring in the country and across the world.
He asked that RM produce more content about agricultural production, health and disaster prevention, as well as entertainment and other programs contributing to social and cultural life.
