The Revúboé river in Tete broke its banks during the early hours of this Friday, affecting several neighbourhoods in the region and leaving people stranded. According to Lina Portugal, permanent secretary of Tete, the flooding was caused by rains in the central zone of the country raising water levels in the river.
Portugal said some rescue teams were already in place providing first aid.
“At this moment we already have the rescue teams on the ground with three boats to evacuate the population,” Portugal said over the telephone.
Portugal said a reception centre where the population could be transferred to had been established, so that accompaniment and support could be carried out a posteriori.
“A health team and the INGC are already at the reception centre,” she added.
Portugal reported that, as a precautionary measure, traffic on the bridge had been suspended pending an accurate assessment of safety issues.
Authorities do not as yet have any report of possible casualties.
