The General Proposal and Revision of the National Defence and Armed Forces Law was approved today in the Mozambican parliament with 47 votes against, 13 abstentions and 137 in favour out of a total of 197 deputies present.
This is Law 18/97 of October 1st, which has not seen any significant changes in the last 22 years. But it took only two hours for this record to be broken on Monday, with the minister of justice explaining some of the changes being introduced.
These changes had merited the attention of the Parliamentary Commission on Defence and Public Order, which, although Renamo members of the group disapproved, considered its revision timely.
The Commission on Constitutional Affairs and Legality proposed some changes in the proposed revision of the law, which were taken into consideration by the Minister of Justice, and there remains room for clarification on the creation of the military courts invoked by Renamo.
That accomplished, the Proposed Revision of the National Defence and Armed Forces Law was generally approved with 47 Renamo votes against, 13 MDM abstentions and 137 Frelimo votes in favour.
