UNICEF, UNESCO and other partners have mobilised US$15 million to create hygienic conditions for the resumption of classes in national schools, TVM reported on Friday (July 3).
Mozambique is one of the 191 countries in the world known to have closed schools because of Covid-19.
Four months after the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a global pandemic, face-to-face classes have been resuming all over the world, requiring additional financial efforts from governments to enforce hygiene on school grounds and make social distancing in classrooms possible.
Under the Global Partnership for Education, UNICEF, UNESCO and other organisations have mobilised US$15 million to support the resumption of face-to-face classes in a healthy, clean environment, free from contamination with the new coronavirus.
The resumption of face-to-face classes was announced by the government a few days ago and is expected to roll out over three phases. UNICEF and UNESCO are supporting the government’s initiative, understanding that access to education is an acquired right of children.
However, they call for the creation of hygiene and sanitation conditions before the restart of face-to-face classes, and only 30% of schools in Mozambique are estimated to have created the necessary conditions.
