Sources in the district capital of Mocímboa da Praia district, in Cabo Delgado province, report that the bodies of 20 presumed civilians, whose cause of death is still unknown, were found last Thursday.
The bodies were discovered two days before the latest attack on the town, next to the bridge over the Quinhevo River, a few kilometres from the district capital, by a group of people who had gone to the river to fetch water.
According to these sources, some of the dead have been identified, by means of their clothing, as being members of the group of people seized by the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) on suspicion of cooperating with the insurgents who visit the residential areas of Nabubussi and Nacala in the Milamba neighbourhood on an almost daily basis.
Sources say that the FDS conducted house-to-house searches of the Milamba and Nanduadua neighbourhoods last Saturday, a week before the latest attack.
The FDS are said to have “kidnapped” some citizens and injured others, in addition to seizing belongings, including telephones and money. There is also talk of people in mosques being harassed. Despite the prohibition on opening under State of Emergency regulations, mosques in that part of the country have remained open.
