Residents of the Maputo neighbourhood of Chiango on Monday blocked traffic along the Maputo Ring Road in pursuit of their demand for another footbridge over the road.
Traffic along the road was halted for about two hours, before the police dispersed the demonstrators.
Interviewed by the independent television station STV, angry protesters claimed that fast moving vehicles frequently knock down residents trying to cross the ring road. They alleged there have been deaths and hit and run incidents.
A similar protest in June led to the construction of a footbridge near the Chiango Primary School. That bridge was built on the express orders of President Filipe Nyusi, who visited Chiango to see for himself the situation that had led residents to block the road.
On Monday the governor of Maputo city, Iolanda Cintura, said the concern of the Chianga residents was legitimate, but criticised their tactics of blockading the road.
She thought it was important to raise the awareness of motorists using the ring road to avoid excessive speed.
