Reports: Zimbabwean govt plans to regulate social media

There’s been outrage in Zimbabwe following news that the authorities plan to regulate social media sites including Facebook and Twitter.

Reports say local web developers are working on their own versions of these sites.

It remains unclear what form the regulation will take, and whether it will actually go ahead.

There’s been speculation on social media that some platforms could be blocked, but the IT Minister Supa Mandiwanzira says that this is not about a ban.

Around 48 percent of Zimbabweans are connected to the internet, according to official figures, and WhatsApp is the social media platform that has by far the most use.
