After retaking the Mbau administrative post and adjacent bases, the joint force composed mostly of Mozambican and Rwandan Defence and Security Forces has now turned its attention to the Siri I and II bases.
Despite some confrontation in specific locations, the terrorist groups have in general chosen to outwit the joint force by fleeing to other locations through the forests of northern Cabo Delgado, eventually to other parts of the province, or even outside it.
Under this assumption, a part of the group is believed to have left Mbau and proceeded south towards the coastal area of Mucojo, in the neighbouring district of Macomia.
This is because, over the past week, the decapitation of fishermen active in the region has been reported, indicating an attack on Tuesday. The information was given by three fishermen who managed to reach, albeit injured, the town of Macomia.
It is believed that the attack was carried out by terrorists fleeing bases that are gradually being occupied by the Defence and Security Forces. Survivors of the attack say that the alleged insurgents were seen between the Nagulue and Simbolongo areas.
In fact, some FDS officials had already suggested signs that the groups were descending towards Mucojo after being expelled from bases in Mocímboa da Praia and Muidumbe.
Some of the strategic locations that had been occupied are the same ones which hosted Frelimo bases during the national liberation struggle, and were retaken by the Armed Forces of Mozambique during the civil war.
Aerodrome expansion
Other news from Macomia town reports the expansion of the aerodrome in the Xinavane neighbourhood, among other small interventions aimed at signalling the re-establishment of basic security conditions and encouraging people to return.
In this regard, Macomia district administrator Tomás Badae on the 25th of August led the 8th ordinary session of the district government, which discussed matters related to the reconstruction of infrastructure and actions to guarantee public order.
Zinc sheets were then handed out to merchants who had suffered from the terrorist attacks, and sewing machines were distributed to some internally displaced persons.
The Organisation of Mozambican Women[ OMM – the women’s wing of FrelimoO] reserved the day for the presentation of the district administrator’s wife in the villages of Likangano, seven kilometres from the town, as well as in the neighbourhoods of Napulubo, Xinavane and Changane.
