Renowned Mozambican drummer and composer and RM member Zeca Tcheco died earlier today.
One of the biggest names and greatest instrumentalists in Mozambican music, Zeca Tcheco passed away at Maputo Military Hospital, where he had been since May 10.
No information about his illness was disclosed, but it is known that the medical team taking care of Tcheco was still performing diagnostic tests.
One of the 1979 founders of RM, José Daniel Tcheco was one of the most important figures on the Mozambican music scene, with a career spanning more than 40 years.
Father of rapper Danny OG and brother Paíto Tcheco, drummer and percussionist in the Ghorwane group, Tcheco was the composer of the classic “Mamana,” sung by Mingas. He accompanied such big names as Xidiminguana, Edy Mondlane, Wazimbo, Mingas and Pedro Ben, to name but a few.
Tcheco participated in the production and launch of the first original RM work, “Muli Hefu Tcheco ” last year.
It was with Zeca Tcheco that Chico António and Mingas won Radio France International’s “Discovery” prize, with the theme “Baila Maria”.
