Reuters reports that a senior official of Mozambique’s Renamo opposition party (Manuel Bissopo) was shot and wounded on Wednesday, hours after he accused pro-government militia of killing and abducting members of his party, police said.
Issued at around 5pm, the Reuters report states that Manuel Bissopo, the Secretary General of Renamo, was shot by unknown assailants after holding a press conference in Beira, the second largest city in the southern African country.
He was hospitalised after the shooting, police said. His bodyguard was killed.
According to a Lusa report, citing Renamo’s sources, Manuel Bissopo is hospitalised in a critical, “life-threatening condition”.
Renamo’s spokesman, António Muchanga, and the leader of Renamo in Pariament, Ivone Soares, both have confirmed to Lusa that Bissopo was shot after the press conference and that his bodyguard died on the spot.
Contacted by Lusa, the spokesman to the general command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) said that he was unaware of the case; and the command of the police force in Sofala province only confirmed the occurrence of a shooting in the neighbourhood of Munhava, in Beira, with no mention of the Renamo’s leader involvement, adds the same source.
