Renamo on Monday morning presented Saimone Macuiana as substitute for the murdered Jeremias Pondeca at the Joint Commission dialogue between the Renamo and the government.
José Manteigas, head of the Renamo delegation, and Mario Raffaeli, coordinator of the team of international mediators, confirmed the replacement to Canalmoz at the end of the bilateral meeting marking the beginning of the fifth round of the Joint Commission negotiations.
Saimone Macuiana, a law graduate, is an Assembly of the Republic deputy and head of Renamo’s Legal Department and was, for two years, head of the Renamo delegation in the negotiations with the government held at the Joaquim Chissano Conference Center in Maputo which culminated in the signing of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement on September 5, 2014.
Jeremias Pondeca was deputy head of Renamo’s Joint Commission delegation and was also the Renamo lead in the subcommittee preparing draft decentralisation legislation with a view to the opposition party governance of the “six provinces”.
He was murdered on the morning of 8 October in Maputo’s Costa do Sol neighbourhood.
On Monday afternoon international mediators, with the exception of Father Angelo Romano and Quett Masire, who had not yet arrived, held a bilateral meeting with the Frelimo representatives in order to learn of progress on proposals left on the table at the end of the fourth round.
Raffaeli told Canalmoz that Father Angelo Romano was currently busy with commitments in various European universities and would arrive in Maputo in the next few days. Raffaelli said that former Botswana president Quett Masire had had a heart attack in London and was now recovering in Botswana.
