Post-electoral: Escape of over 1,500 prisoners from Maputo Prison leaves 33 dead

The condition of the general secretary of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) political party, Manuel Bissopo, shot on Wednesday in Beira in central Mozambique, is “stable”, according to party spokesman António Muchanga.
Speaking to Lusa on Thursday, Muchanga said that the secretary-general of Renamo was receiving medical care in a private clinic in Beira, with his transfer to South Africa for surgery dependent on an assessment of his condition.
“His condition is stable,” Muchanga said. “The doctors will assess whether he will able to withstand transfer to South Africa.”
Bissopo was shot early on Wednesday afternoon in Beira. Contrary to earlier reports of his having been shot in the Munhava neighbourhood, an opposition bastion, the incident actually occurred in the upmarket neighbourhood of Ponta Gea, in the heart of Beira, as Bissopo was leaving a press conference where he had denounced the alleged abduction and murder of Renamo members.
According to local journalists, the gunmen blocked off Bissopo’s car with two vehicles and opened fire.
At the entrance of the medical clinic, Bissopo was conscious and made a short statement to the press, describing the incident.
“We were passing in front of the Traffic Services. I saw a double-cab car making a turn and someone taking out a Kalashnikov [assault rifle] and firing. They hit me,” Bissopo said.
Bissopo’s Renamo bodyguard died on the spot, with the other two occupants of the vehicle suffering minor injuries.
Police in Beira said they were investigating the case, without mentioning the involvement of the Renamo secretary general or other party members specifically.
Frelimo and Renamo have been accusing each other in recent weeks of kidnapping and assassinating their leaders in Sofala province.
