Renamo Secretary-General Manuel Bissopo says the government must stop the wave of murders perpetrated by armed men in Cabo Delgado.
Bissopo says that the people should no longer live with the situation, and that the government is responsible for stopping the phenomenon and avoiding more civilian deaths.
The wave of killing in the province has already caused more than three dozen deaths, mostly civilians.
“I have been following the Cabo Delgado situation, and I believe it is a matter that does not help our nation at the international level,” the Renamo secretary-general says. It is an unacceptable situation, he says, encouraging the government to focus on solving the problem and finding out who is behind the wave of killings.
“This problem must be cut off at the root, because in our view as Renamo and as in the vision of the late president, the ceaseless truce decreed, with a clear perspective that Mozambique would no return to armed clashes, plunging people into a situation of insecurity once again,” Bissopo declares.
For Renamo’s Secretary-general, such instability may deter investors just at a time when the province is seeing investment in the area’s natural resources. “On our side, we want Mozambique to move forward, we want the country to have confidence. We need a lot of investment and investors need to be sure that in the country the environment is peaceful and there is no conflict,” he says.
Renamo wants Cabo Delgado’s resources to benefit Mozambicans, but with the wave of instability, the situation may be compromised, thus the urgency to take a stand to end the killings.
The armed attacks began in October 2017, with the latest attacks in Cabo Delgado involving the beheading of seven civilians, prompting Interior Minister Jaime Basílio Monteiro to visit the province.
