Registration of Renamo guerrilla, for the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) process has already started, secretary general of Mozambique’s main opposition party André Magibire says.
“The Committee on Military Affairs is checking all Renamo bases and handing out the files to all guerrillas so that they can indicate how they would like to be reintegrated into society,” today’s O País newspaper quotes him as saying.
According to the same source, after registration, the guerrillas will move to cantonment centres pending their demobilisation or integration in the Defence and Security Forces.
“The Memorandum of Understanding itself states that there will be cantonment for the selection of officers, some of whom will go to the Defence and Security Forces. Others will be demobilised,” Magibire says.
Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi and the Renamo leader recently announced a commitment to conclude the DDR process by August.
