Gunmen killed on Thursday night, December 15, in Nampula, a Renamo member of the provincial assembly.
Relatives of Jose Almeida Murevete said that everything happened around 11pm when an unspecified number of armed individuals went to his residence and riddled the Renamo deputy with bullets, killing him.
Murevete’s residence is about 30 metres from the Muatala police station in Nampula city but, according to relatives, despite the call for help, the police responded almost six hours later.
Family members lament the police’s actions and say they believe Murevete’s death is part of the current political violence in the country.
The clinical director of Nampula Central Hospital, Bainabo Sahal, confirmed the entry of the body, victim of gunfire Thursday night.
At that point, said Sahal, the hospital was waiting for the authorisation of the Criminal Investigation Police (PIC) to conduct the autopsy.
Police spokesman in Nampula, Zacarias Nacute, said police is in possession of evidence of the crime and guerantees to investigate and clarify the case as well as to neutralise the criminals.
As for police action, Nacute acknowledges there has been a major failure in crime prevention by the corporation.
Despite the efforts of the VOA, Renamo has refused to comment.
