The Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo, Mozambique’s main opposition party) on Tuesday (31-01) described the attacks on vehicles of Mozambican citizens in South Africa as “repugnant”, demanding coordinated actions from the two governments to end insecurity.
“These actions by malefactors are simply repugnant and contemptible, in the most vehement terms. Therefore, we call on the Mozambican authorities to, as soon as possible, initiate a diligence with the South African authorities for their clarification,” the head of Renamo’s Department of Foreign Affairs said.
Manuel Massungue was speaking at a press conference in Maputo following an armed attack on vehicles with Mozambican registration on a section of road in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, last Saturday.
Massungue criticized the “slowness” of the Mozambican government in “adopting measures to stop this evil”.
To the South African government, Massungue said: “We appeal to the South African Government to put an end to these atrocities, whose victims are innocent and defenceless citizens.”
Emphasizing the brotherly bonds between the two countries, Massungue recalled that Mozambique gave asylum to South African militants fighting apartheid, the system of racial segregation imposed until the end of the 20th century by the white minority regime in South Africa.
On Tuesday, South African Police (SAPS) commissioner Fannie Masemola visited the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal province, near the border with Mozambique, to assess the police response to cross-border crime, the force announced.
“The commissioner’s visit follows the recent incident in which at least six vehicles, including a tourist bus and a lorry, were burned on the R22 road between Hluhluwe and Mbazwana,” the South African police said in a statement.
Mozambique’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo, on Monday described the situation arising from the attacks on Mozambican vehicles in South Africa as “complicated”, promising efforts between the governments of the two countries to end insecurity.
