José Naitele, a member of the Renamo party and a former deputy of the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique, was shot dead yesterday in the city of Nampula, a few meters away from his residence, in the Namutequeliua neighbourhood.
Naitele’s car was hit by more than ten bullets fired by hitherto unknown individuals, O País reports.
The crime took place at around 2PM when the victim was on his way back home. The wife of the deceased said that he was being threatened and persecuted by unknown individuals.
“My husband left today at 9 am for service. Yesterday he told me that he was being persecuted and no longer felt safe. At night, strangers would arrive here with machetes, and not one of us knows who these people are, “said the victim’s wife.
Renamo’s spokesman António Muchanga, cited by Voa Portugues, revealed that more than 10 shots were fired at Naitela, according to data obtained from eyewitnesses and police expertise.
Muchanga suspects this action might have been perpetrated “by death squads seeking to eliminate members of the [Renamo] party.”
“There is no thug who will shoot more than 10 shots inside the city,” he told Voa.
José Naitele leaves a pregnant widow and eight children.
