A former president of the Renamo Youth League has died in a robbery in the Matundo neighbourhood of the Tete provincial capital, a Renamo source told Lusa on Wednesday.
The death of Salifo Selemane occurred after a group of people so far unidentified stole his motorbike and money at around 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Renamo spokesperson in Tete, Nuno Zacarias, said.
“Our colleague’s body was only found the next day and was not bloody. The violence was carried out on the genitals,” said the spokesperson.
Zacarias said Selemane’s documents and cell phone were found in his pockets, but the phone’s “call records and messages were erased by the alleged criminals”.
The spokesperson raised the possibility that the murder was political in nature, but left further clarification to the police.
Contacted by Lusa, the Mozambican police promised to comment on Thursday, adding that an “extensive gang” of people dedicated to stealing motorbikes in Tete will be presented then.
Salifo Selemane was president of the Renamo Youth League in the Matundo neighbourhood in 2018.
