A member of Mozambique’s largest opposition party, the former rebel movement Renamo, was electrocuted on Tuesday when he attempted to flypost Renamo propaganda material on an electricity pylon in the municipality of Milange, in the central province of Zambezia.
The man, who has not been named, was part of a group of Renamo members and supporters who were distributing posters on the first day of the official election campaign ahead of the municipal elections scheduled for 10 October.
The Milange district police commander, Fernando Antonio, confirmed the death to AIM. “Unfortunately, on the first day of the campaign, we recorded a death by electrocution”, he said. “The deceased was trying to fix propaganda material on a pylon in the 12 October neighbourhood”.
Apart from this tragic incident, the first day of the campaign passed off peacefully, and there were no clashes between rival parties, said Antonio.
“We are urging municipal citizens and the competing parties to look carefully at where they intend to put their election propaganda and avoid dangerous places”, he said. “We are also urging them to turn the campaign into a truly festive occasion”.
