2024: Demonstrations and tear gas on the streets mark the year in Mozambique - Lusa
Renamo's leader - Ossufo Momade
Ossufo Momade, the leader of Renamo, Mozambique’s main opposition party, has accused the government of violating the memorandum of understanding signed by both parties, expressing disappointment with the interim appointment of Renamo officers to army posts.
“We want to express once again our indignation and concern about the slow implementation of this memorandum of understanding. We are also concerned about its violation, since this document signed by me and the President of the Republic does not provide for interim appointments,” Momade said in a statement.
Momade commented on the progress in implementing the programme in a statement read by telephone from the Gorongosa mountain range in central Mozambique to the media convened in the party headquarters in Maputo.
Renamo, Momade said, had submitted the names of 14 officers to the government as candidates for leadership positions in the Defence Forces of Mozambique (FADM), but only three were temporarily assigned to senior positions.
“The Mozambicans are concerned that the Minister of National Defence intends to ignore and disregard this memorandum of understanding, which indicates the existence of two centres of command within the Defence and Security Forces,” the main opposition party’s interim leader said.
Momade asked President Nyusi to correct the ‘interim’ appointments and proceed in accordance with the memorandum of understanding.
“For the good of the nation, we also ask for speed in the next steps,” he added.
Momade also reiterated Renamo’s rejection of the results of the October 10 municipal elections, calling its scrutiny a farce.
“We reiterate our appeal to the President of the Republic, Mozambican civil society, religious confessions and the international community, including the United Nations, to jointly reinstate the electoral truth of October 10,” he said.
