Gunmen of the Mozambican rebel movement last week kidnapped and beat a “regulo” (traditional chief) in a village in Manica district, in the central province of the same name.
According to the Manica provincial police spokesperson, Elcidia Filipe, speaking at her weekly press briefing, the regulo, Elias Sogoro, was seized from his family home in Ruele village. He was dragged into the bush, where he was severely beaten.
The police rescued Sogoro two days after he had been abducted. “The police acted promptly when we were notified of the crime”, said Filipe. “We rescued him, but he has serious injuries. He is now receiving medical care at a hospital in the province”. The motive for the attack is unknown.
Filipe said that over the weekend the body of a young man was found in the provincial capital, Chimoio. He had died after suffering a serious assault, and three people have been detained in connection with the crime. This murder seems unconnected with Renamo’s continuing insurrection.
Filipe took the opportunity to urge citizens to remain vigilant and to denounce to the authorities any acts which might disturb public order and tranquillity, particularly at a time when the Xmas and New Year holidays are approaching.
