Renamo introduces new head of list for Maputo city

Mozambique’s Renamo opposition party has today introduced its new head of list for the October 10 municipal elections. Venancio Mondlane has been appointed the spokesman for the Maputo electoral campaign, Renamo announced this morning.

This decision comes after the Constitutional Council, Mozambique’s highest body on constitutional and electoral law, yesterday rejecting for the second time the party’s appeal against the banning of Venancio Mondlane as head of its list of candidates for the Maputo Municipal Assembly.

According to an official Renamo source, the party had no alternative but to replace Mondlane with its number two on the list, Hermínio Morais, who has been engaged in pre-campaign action for several days.

The Constitutional Council decision was unanimous among the five judges present, including the judge appointed by Renamo’s parliamentary bench, Manuel Frank.
