Ossufo Momade, the coordinator of Renamo’s Political Commission and head of Mozambique’s main opposition party, suspended his term of office today, Parliamentary Speaker Veronica Macamo has announced.
The deputy has not attended sessions of the Assembly of the Republic since he replaced the late Afonso Dhlakama as leader of Renamo in May.
Macamo said during the Assembly’s plenary session today that Ossufo Momade had asked to temporarily withdraw from his parliamentary seat, to be replaced in parliament by deputy Essa Misé.
Ossufo Momade was appointed coordinator of the Renamo Political Commission in May, temporarily replacing Afonso Dhlakama as leader pending the election of a new president.
Following his appointment as interim coordinator, Momade, a general in the reserve, moved to the Gorongosa Mountains, where the main base of Renamo’s armed wing is located.
The party announced at the beginning of November that it would hold an elective congress at the beginning of next year, but the candidates to succeed Afonso Dhlakama are not yet known.
