About 20 Renamo armed men stormed the village of Mopeia, in Mopeia district, Zambezia, in central Mozambique, and occupied the police station for an hour on Saturday.
Mopeia district administrator Vidal Bila confirmed the facts to Radio Mozambique, adding that normality was restored after a 45-minute exchange of fire.
“The intention of the Renamo men was to seize police firearms, but they failed because, for strategic reasons, weapons are no longer stored in the station. Each agent keeps his own gun,” Bila said.
A man who was in police custody at the time died in the incident.
