Gunmen from the illicit militia of Mozambique’s main opposition party, the former rebel movement Renamo, attacked and killed a tractor driver on Saturday in Chigubo district, in the southern province of Renamo.
According to a report on Radio Mozambique, the incident occurred in the Saute administrative post. The tractor driver was part of a team involved in distributing drinking water to several drought stricken villages in Chigubo.
The spokesperson for the Gaza Provincial Police Command, Jeremias Langa, said the Renamo gang also stole property from the local population, including two head of cattle and various domestic utensils. He added that, after the incident, security measures were taken to guarantee a return to normality.
“When the group of armed bandits realized that members of the defence and security forces were in the vicinity, they fled towards Funhalouro (in the neighbouring province of Inhambane)”, said Langa. “Right now measures have been taken. We urge the population of Chigubo, and of all of Gaza province, to stay calm, because the defence and security forces are on the ground controlling the situation”.
The atmosphere in Chigubo had been very disturbed, he added, “but there is now calm among the public”.
