“We want you to assure us that Mozambique does not become a failed, pariah state,” President Nyusi said at his inauguration.
After eight years in ‘retirement’, Mozambique Defence Forces general Lagos Lidimo was sworn in as the new director general of the State Information and Security Service (SISE) on Wednesday.
Lidimo received the Head of State’s trust in his ability to lead the national secret service, with the main mission of working to increase its capacity to defend the integrity of the country in the face of internal and external threats through increasingly active investigation.
“We want to be assured that Mozambique will not become a failed, pariah state within the international community,” President Nyusi said.
The Head of State drew attention to threatening factors “capable of weakening our country” that must be taken into account by the intelligence services.
He highlighted cross-border crime such as smuggling, drug trafficking, trafficking in persons and illegal immigration, adding to the list corruption, threats to human rights, lack of social justice and “rampant exploitation of resources”.
After several decades in the armed forces, his last 14 years as Chief of Defence, Lidimo received an additional mission from Nyusi: to use the experience of reconciliation that he demonstrated after the Rome Accords heading the unified post-war army.
Renamo, the largest party of the national opposition, welcomed Lidimo’s appointment, saying it considered him the right man to discipline the ranks.
“With his experience, he is just the man to help, because there is a lot of indiscipline in the armed forces at the moment. With the qualities he demonstrated in command of the Armed Forces, he can be an important figure,” Renamo spokesman Antonio Muchanga commented.
