Renamo has this morning formalised the candidacy of Ossufo Momade for the position of President of the Republic, in the October 15 elections.
The formality took place in the Constitutional Council under the direction of Venâncio Mondlane, in his capacity as representative of the political party.
The documents were received by the bench of the Constitutional Council in a ceremony witnessed by Renamo Secretary General André Magibire and a number of Renamo members and supporters.
The substitute presiding judge of the Constitutional Council confirmed the reception of the candidacy of Ossufo Momade and the lists of the signatures of the Renamo members who support his candidacy.
In a press conference after presenting the papers, André Magibire said that Ossufo Momade was not present for the submission of his candidacy because he was holding meetings in Gorongosa to deal with military matters.
He added that Renamo remained committed to peace, and that teams from his party were active in several provinces identifying bases for the cantonment of their men.
“We proceeded with the submission of the candidacy of Ossufo Momade to the post of President of the Republic, with a support of 200,000 signatures, against the 20,000 required by law and still 20 days before the deadline, We hope that soon after the vote of 15 October, Renamo and its candidate will be proclaimed victorious,” he said.
Responding to a question about Renamo’s internal situation, Magibire declared it “very well and healthy”.
