Renamo Assembly of the Republic deputy Rafael Gusmão was laid to rest yesterday in Nacala the central cemetery. He died of a cardiac arrest in Gorongosa, Sofala Province, last Saturday, while attending a meeting of his party’s Political Commission.
Personalities from the national political scene attending the funeral included First Vice-President of the Assembly of the Republic António Amélia, Permanent Secretary of the Province of Nampula Dinis da Costa, other members of parliament and family and friends.
The deputy speaker said in his funeral oration that the physical disappearance of Mr Gusmão left the legislative house inconsolable and created a huge void among the deputies and in his family.
MPs had shared many special moments with the deceased, he said, and Gusmão, with his knowledge and delivery, had contributed to the achievement of parliamentary objectives in the legislature, particularly as a member of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Human Rights and Legality.
“Our words are insignificant in this moment of pain and mourning, but we deliver them in the expectation that they will serve as a consolation, and bring strength to face the challenges of life,” António Amélia, quoted in a statement from the Assembly of the Republic that AIM has had access to, said.
Deputy Lúcia Afate in turn said that Gusmão was an inescapable figure in parliamentary and party business, and that his dedication and commitment meant his name would always be linked with Renamo’s most signal moments.
“We admire him for his relentless dedication to the building of democracy, justice, respect for human rights, and his untiring commitment to the cause of the people,” she added.
It was this dedication and commitment to the national cause that took Gusmao on the party mission to the Gorongosa mountains where he lost his life.
