The second most popular party in Marromeu municipality, Sofala province, says that members of Frelimo party tried to bribe Renamo members to elect them to leadership positions in the municipal assembly.
Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo) members have reportedly tried to persuade members of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) to vote for Frelimo in elections to leadership positions such as the president or vice-president of the municipal assembly.
António Bauase, Renamo spokesman in the Marromeu Municipal Assembly, denounced the matter.
“Frelimo members came to our homes to corrupt us with money, because they knew we were tied: eight [municipal assembly deputies] from Frelimo, eight from Renamo and one from MDM. I myself was a victim of this, ” said Bauase.
“Frelimo members came to our homes to corrupt us with money, because they knew we were tied: eight [municipal assembly deputies] from Frelimo, eight from Renamo and one from MDM. I myself was a victim of this,” he said.
Voting impediment
Renamo, who previously claimed that the Marromeu elections were fraudulent, will not assume any position of leadership in the Municipal Assembly, because one of its members, a substitute for another who had died, did not have the right to vote.
“One of our members died, so we submitted the documents to the state administration requesting his replacement. When it was time for the judge to decide, he announced that the substitution of that member was automatic, but at the time of voting for the president and deputy secretary of the assembly’s election, the judge announced that the substitute member did not have the right to vote, a decision that, in our view, has no explanation, ” said António Bauase.
Renamo therefore had only seven votes while Frelimo had eight, thereby winning all three leadership positions.
João Alberto, head of the Frelimo bench, said that regulations justify the impediment to voting. “Only after the election of the local assembly office bearers [which took place only last Thursday] can legal documents be presented to find out can legal documents be presented to find out where the person is …”.
He denied the allegations of bribery, challenging Renamo to present evidence.
On Thursday (07-02), Victory Artur Timbe took office as mayor, in a ceremony boycotted by Renamo.
