Voicing claims that Frelimo had “planned and carried out voter registration in the dead of night, in the houses of neighbourhood secretaries, activist groups and community leaders”, Renamo has demanded the “annulment and auditing of the electoral registration and the carrying out of a new one that is impartial and free from manipulation and vice” in order to guarantee that the 6th Municipal Elections in Mozambique are free, fair and transparent.
“Thousands of potential voters identified as members of the opposition, particularly Renamo, [but also] the elderly, citizens with albinism, citizens with disabilities and others who are supposedly not members of Frelimo were prevented from registering. In violation of the law, Frelimo transported citizens from non-municipal districts to register,” José Manteigas, spokesman for the largest political opposition force in Mozambique, said this Tuesday (06-06).
Manteigas accused Renamo, which has held power since 1975, of having “planned and carried out in the dead of night, in the houses of neighbourhood secretaries, activist groups and community leaders, what constitutes an authentic serious public crime that should deserve the immediate attention of the administration of justice apparatus. Some STAE directors, brigade members and police agents did everything they could to manipulate voter registration, getting involved in criminal acts under the impassive, serene and conniving gaze of the Public Prosecutor’s Office”.
Given the ineffectuality of its denunciations to the general public and National Elections Commission (CNE) of “serious irregularities”, Renamo now “demands the annulment and auditing of the voter register and the carrying out of a new one that is impartial and free of manipulation and vice in order to guarantee free, fair and transparent elections”.
“We immediately call on all Mozambicans from Rovuma to Maputo to join our fight and voice by acting energetically against this attempt to kill democracy and perpetuate the dictatorship, because accepting this voter registration will be accepting electoral fraud and mortgaging our future,” Manteigas urged.
