Armed Renamo men attacked a police station in the administrative post of Chiramba in Sofala’s Chemba district early on Sunday morning, leading residents to flee for their own safety, state-owned newspaper Noticias reported on Monday.
The provincial police commander in the region, Alfredo Mussa, who confirmed the attack to Notícias on Sunday afternoon, gave no further details, citing poor communication with the police at the station.
“I can confirm that armed Renamo men attacked the police station in Chiramba this morning [Sunday] and that there was a disturbance. But due to lack of communication with our members in the field, we do not have any more information,” Mussa said.
Additional information provided by Chemba administrator Joao Geral Patricio on Sunday suggests that armed Renamo men have been circulating in the administrative post of Chiramba since last week.
Public servants such as nurses, teachers and agricultural technicians have reportedly abandoned their jobs and fled to the village of Chemba, 50 kilometres away.
Patricio however reproved such behaviour, chatacterising it as opportunism, and has scheduled a working trip to the area in order to ascertain the true level of political instability 600 km north of Beira city, the Sofala provincial capital.
Chemba is located on the banks of the Zambezi River. The district borders with the neighbouring districts of Tambara (Manica province), Maringué and Caia (Sofala province) and it is separated from Mutare (Tete province) by the river.
