Suspected Renamo men burnt down six houses and killed one person in the village of Tsane in Inhambane province’s Funhalouro district on the 18th of July.
At about 2:00 a.m., armed men began burning houses demanding to know the whereabouts of the local secretary of Frelimo. They eventually murdered his wife.
Alzira Bernardo, the victim’s daughter, told O País she saw her mother killed. Still in shock, she said experienced terror when they invaded their hut, took them out, and then shot her mother.
The alleged Renamo men then attacked the victim’s daughter and threatened to kill her too, as a member of the village’s advisory council. Instead, the attackers set fire to her hut and took all their possessions, including mobile phones, clothes and food.
Following the incident, residents of the area now sleep outside for fear of further attacks. “We sleep in the bush. We leave here at four in the afternoon and only come back next day after eight o’clock,” Alzira says.
The local school has also been obliged to change its schedule so that pupils can go to the forest to hide. Students’ education is suffering as a result.
