The leaders of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) and the Mozambican Democratic Movement (MDM), Mozambique’s two largest opposition parties, met behind closed doors with the October 10 local elections in mind.
Lutero Simango and Ossufo Momade reject the ‘Commission to Reflect on the Viability of Holding District Elections’ (CRED) , claiming that Frelimo and its president, Filipe Nyusi, abuse power and intend to “assassinate” democracy.
The opposition parties are in tune regarding the creation by the government of this commission to reflect on the first district elections in the country’s history, foreseen in the Constitution for next year. Lutero Simango, president of the MDM, is clear. “We at the MDM have already said several times that the constitutional command must be obeyed. The constitutional command is not up for discussion,” he stressed.
This position was supported by Renamo president Ossufo Momade. “President Dhlakama died knowing that these elections were going to take place, but today the President of the Republic appears saying that there is no room for them to take place. It is abuse, as well as showing a lack of respect, because what is in the law must be fulfilled,” Momade said.
