Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs Georges Rebelo Pinto Chikoti is paying an official three-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Angola and Mozambique.
Interviewed by Angop upon leaving Luanda, in airport, 4 de Fevereiro, the Angolan minister said that the mission comes in the wake of the visit of President Filipe Nyusi to Angola in 2015, adding that the parties would hold talks in order to find mechanisms to enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields, and discuss a possible visit to Mozambique by Angolan head of state President José Eduardo dos Santos at the invitation of President Nyusi.
Minister Chikoti recalled on the same occasion that Angola has recently forgiven 50 percent of Mozambique’s debt (an amount he did not disclose) and that the remaining portion of the debt is to be converted into Angolan government assets in Mozambique, a subject that will also be addressed on his current visit.
Minister Chikoti will meet President Nyusi and Speaker of Parliament Verónica Macamo during his first visit to Mozambique as foreign minister, and is leading an official delegation composed of officials from his sector. Talks start in Maputo on Monday and their return to Luanda is scheduled for Wednesday.
The Angola and Mozambique republics maintain excellent relations of cooperation both bilaterally and in the SADC, CPLP, PALOP and international organizations they belong to.
