Shortly after the discovery of the bodies on Friday, the relatives of the two prison inmates snatched from police escort on Maputo’s Ave 25 de Setembro last week went to the Maputo Central Hospital morgue, where they confirmed the identity of the victims, José Aly Coutinho and Alfredo Muchanga, according to O País.

Requesting anonymity, Coutinho’s relatives described the body’s bullet wounds and state of decomposition when they saw it in the morgue, and say They have no doubt that their family member was then executed.
Coutinho was buried in Lhanguene cemetery on Saturday morning after a service in a mosque in Maputo.
Relatives suspect police involvement in the execution of the two defendants. Contacted by O País newspaper, the police in Maputo province promised to comment on the murder of two prisoners soon.
One of the dead is José Coutinho, accused of the death of Matola prosecutor Marclino Vilanculo, who was murdered a year ago, reports Voa Portugues.

The two prisoners were seized from a police car on April 24 on their way to court in Maputo, and were found dead in a trench 70 kilometres from the Mozambican capital. The Mozambican Information Agency reported that they were discovered on Friday 5 May by residents of Moamba district, who said they had heard shots on the day the prisoners were seized from their police escort.
José Coutinho was one of three suspects in the murder of Matola prosecutor Marcelino Vilanculo, whose investigation into abductions of businessmen involved Coutinho himself. One of his alleged co-conspirators, Adbul Tempe, fled in October, while Amade Antonio, the third suspect, is still in custody.

The attorney general has ordered an investigation into the circumstances of escape.
