Mozambique: Food assistance for 500 families affected by drought in four districts of northern Gaza
The Maratane camp in Nampula province houses more than 10,000 refugees, mostly from Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Somalia, and their representative committee has issued denunciations of self-enrichment by people with responsibilities in the area at the expense of the displaced.
The Maratane refugees say that this is why they live in extreme poverty, with their education and the health systems dysfunctional and the only hospital in the country’s largest refugee camp without drugs and run by health personnel without qualifications.
As regards education, there is a single primary school, and to continue their studies above this level pupils have to travel to the provincial capital, Nampula, 30 km away.
The refugees also complain that they face food insecurity, with children especially suffering from hunger and malnutrition, and say that the food distribution system is not transparent.
Isabel Marques, representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Mozambique, acknowledges the plight of the refugees and says that the UN is working to create better conditions.
Marques says that the refugees have left their homes, but not their dreams.
Mozambique is home to 22,000 refugees, mostly from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Somalia.
