Bonuses for doctors and other professionals at the forefront of combating the Covid-19 pandemic were announced in February this year by President Filipe Nyusi, but many have not yet reflected in their accounts.
Challenged on the subject on Monday, the head of the health sector said that the Central Hospital of Maputo was administratively and financially autonomous, and should make up late payments.
“We have already addressed this matter. Subsidies are paid by hospitals, because they have the autonomy to process them,” Health Minister Armindo Tiago said.
Recently, administrative representatives of the Central Hospital of Maputo (HCM) met doctors who have not been paid since January this year, to explain to them, O Pais has learned, that the lack of payment of salaries “is due to the atypical procedure of their hiring, in a situation of emergency”.
At the time, the issue of sending payrolls to the Ministry of Health was mentioned, and guarantees were given that all procedures were being carried out so that the issue could be resolved.
However, this Monday, the Minister of Health said that “in relation to this payment, it should be the Central Hospital of Maputo giving justification for the delays”.
Indian COVID-19 variant
Regarding the existence of an Indian variant of the new coronavirus in Mozambique, Armindo Tiago neither confirmed nor denied the information, only advancing that, at this moment, investigations are ongoing.
“There may even be a Mozambican variant, if an investigation [to find one] were carried out. What we are doing at the moment is to test samples, and we will do the same for other described variants,” the government official said.
“In the near future, when we have results, we will say whether or not we already have the Indian variant in circulation in the country,” he clarified.
Armindo Tiago was speaking at the unveiling of a mural in the Polana Caniço Hospital in Maputo, painted in honour of the health professionals working to prevent and combat Covid-19.
At the event, Tiago announced that doctors and nurses would soon be able to train in intensive care without having to compete for admission.
