Mozambican musician Carlos Hernâni Bertmans Vaz, better known in the music world as ‘Nocas’, died of cerebral malaria in Beira Central Hospital on Sunday morning.
Vaz was the bass player of the Beira-based group Rastilho (‘fuse’ in English). According to friend and fellow band member Jorge Mamade, Nocas was admitted to hospital last Friday feeling unwell.
Considered one of the best bass players in Sofala, Vaz had a long musical career. In addition to playing bass guitar, Nocas also sang and was the author of several compositions, some of which are available on CD.
Nocas entered the music sphere in the 90s with the band Satellites. He later played with Oceana, Rastilho and others. From Rastilho, Nocas later shared the stage with Mamade in another group created by the two.
Last year he celebrated 25 years in music, an event that coincided with his 50th birthday. His passing comes at a time when he was considering recording another album, the second in his career. In a recent interview with ‘Diário de Moçambique’, Nocas revealed that Rastilho, who had been in retirement for some time, were talking about a return to the stage.
Born on June 25, 1966, Nocas leaves two children aged 14 and 16 years of age.
